What To Do If You Are Going To A Square Dancing Group
A lot of people are surprised to find out that square dancing is still alive and well. There are square dance groups and clubs all over the United States. If you are interested in going to one of the square dancing groups, then you need to be sure that you are familiar with the general etiquette of a square dancing club so that you fit in.
Apparel
If you are just there to see if it's something that you are interested in, what you are wearing is probably not going to be a problem. However, if you are going to join the club, you are going to need to make sure that you have clothes that will fit in with the rest of the group. There are general things you should look for, and the group you are with may also suggest other things that you should wear.
In general, men should be wearing western wear. That means that long sleeve western style shirts, long, dark pants or jeans, and a bolo tie or scarf tie. You will also need to have good dancing shoes. There will be people at the club who can help you with that. For women, the general look is the specialized square dance dress. It has several petticoats underneath it so that the skirt will stand up. However, those dresses can be very expensive to get, so if you don't have one, you should at least be wearing a western style dress or skirt and shirt, so that you will fit in.
Behavior
You should always applaud the caller and/or instructor. They are doing a lot of work to make sure that you, and everyone else, is having a lot of fun, so showing them that you appreciate them by applauding them. If you get a chance to speak to the person who leading the class or calling the dance, make sure that you thank them for their hard work. If there is a live band, make sure that you let them know how much you appreciate them coming out to play.
You will be dancing with a lot of other people in your square, and you don't want any of them to do anything that would ruin your fun, so make sure that you are treating them the way that you want to be treated. If you are all beginners, you will all make mistakes, so make sure that you are as forgiving them to you are you would like them to be forgiving to you.
